Holographic Data Storage : The Future of Storage

This is from one of the RC passages i came across. I found this piece of technology so very interesting that i thought this must surely be one of those things that will find a place in my blog.
It talks about storage, more specifically about holographic storage..... which is 3-D storage..... the next level of storage... imagine if u can hold 650Mb in a CD in 2-D mode... the amt of memory the same CD can sore if 3-D technology is used... its gonna run into hundreds of GBs (TBs).... Its like u use laser for both writing the bits as well as for reading them. The hinderence at this point of time is the type of polymer that can be used as the storage media. Look up details about this if u folks get time

The future of search:

How many times have you placed things somewhere and totally forgotten about where u placed them. One minute u had it in ur hand, the next minute u totally have no recollection wotsoever as to where in the world u misplaced it. Well this the sort of thing that happens to me quite often and i'm sure it happens to all of you too.
And the craziest thing is the way in which my mind goes around about this....this is wot happens when you r so damn addicted to the comp: The other day i kept my pen somewhere and culdn't remember where and when the time of necessity came guess wot was the first thing that came up on my mind: where is the functionality for search "pen"... the same search that comes up on ur windows menu...! the funny part is that this has happened 2 to 3 times... there is some unconcious thing in me that always relates me to that comp.. maybe that's the effect u will receive when u spend ur whole work life in front of a silly machine! But then the good part is then i started thinking y not convert it inot a real time application.. :
Some how map the objects in ur room into a virutal map into the comp and scan all the objects into the room into it. Now have this scan function run at periodic intervals. The next time u loose a thing, all u have to do is to use the search functionality.... sound very noble doesn't it..... take it from me, this is gonna be a reality one day....
I think this is gonna be the future of search.... anyone listening?

Btw u ppl ever tried installing google desktop search? no,.. install it and click search u'll notice that the results come up in a few millisecs... whereas ur win search takes such a long time.... now that is wot i call the power of 'indexing' and the way google has implemented it in searching files... kudos to Larry Page!

The Ooty Trip

Kinda been a long time since i blogged last.... Reasons... 1. no time, 2. no motivation, 3. the blogs i vist most frequently are also in the hibernation period.
Fine, wot happened during the past few weeks.
1. Went to Ooty last weekend.
2. Project work just got hectic
The ooty trip:
Misty morning, chilly nights, rolling landscapes, green valleys combined with the laughter of friends, this is the ideal recipe for keep ur mind free of all worries. After more than a month of planning, a blunderous attempt at booking tickets, ppl dropping off... new ones adding to the group, the much awaited ooty plan is all set to materialze.
Thu nite and we r at the KPN bus stand awaiting the bus. We board the semi-sleeper to go to Mettupalayam. Travel was sort of OK, with the bus travelling at speeds i'v never experienced on road transport... with 2 breaks in between , we reach Metupalayam at 9.00 in the moring, and then proceed on by taxi to ootacamund. A 1&1/2 hr journey we reach our destination ( David's uncle's gueshouse ).. we ( myself, david, nithin, hari ) r joined there by the gang for b'lore ( jikku, gt.. purush came over the next day)..
Day 1: Friday
9.00 reach metupalayam
11.00 reach the guesthouse @ ooty
13.00 leave for dinner
15.00 go to botanical gardens...

( This is the only place that 'can be visited' in ooty ) sprawling meadows, rich coloured flowers, well maitained gardens, the flora... nature at its best.
18.00 leave botanical gardens for the city stroll.
20.00 have something to eat, take sandiwich parcels and leave back to gueshouse
22.00 start the talk, play the cards, let the feelings pour out... group discussion at its best
02.00 go to sleep
Day 2: Saturday
06.30 wake up... brr its really cold....go back to sleep
07.30 wake up.... eat ur own breakfast, bread and jam
09.00 leave for a moring stroll donwn the hill side
10.00 Go for the walk down the 'toy train' track all the way till the next station 'Lovedale'

12.30 back to the city & lunch
14.00 leave for the big journey to the 'fishing spot'... u'll find pics at the photos section shortly.... damn it was a 6 km walk to reach the spot... not exactly a trek... u can call it better as a civilized trek (there were roads laid out).

...not to forget the 6km walk back to town also
16.00 reach the place.1
7.30 start the return journey back from the lake.
19.00 reach the city.
21.00 reach back... bread and scambled eggs for dinner
01.30 go of to sleep... felt damn tired ...sore legs... total exhaustion
04.00 others go to sleep

Day 3: Saturday
07.00 wake up..
10.30 Off to Pycara lake for boating
11.30 reach pycara
14.00 reach some meadowy mountain ... more lika hill with grassy slopes.
15.00 lunch
16.30 back to city.
17.00 back to gueshouse & leave for station( supposed to be a 1 hr journey, but on a mountain road, when there is a jam, there is a single lined jam of cars all the way from top of the hill to the bottom, with no overtaking allowed )
19.40 reach mettupalayam station... ( train leaves at 19.45 - in the 'nick of time' as u call it)
20.45 sleep

Day 4: Monday
06.30 reach Chennai Central
07.30 reach home.

Somethings that differed from my usual gang of 'A-batch' ....
1. The lack of ppl eating veg... ( Every single soul wanted non-veg and they wuld be happy if they had just non-veg twice a day ).... huh
2. The lack of hunger... ( These folks were happy skipping one meal..)
The end note: a few days that will remain in my mind for eternity, the happniess and the joy u get when u get together will ur collegemates makes u forget even the deepest of worries!
